CHAPTER NINE

Sebastian slid the key out and opened the door, surprised at how happy he was to be back here. This apartment had rapidly become more comfortable than his own home, perhaps because of Grace Taggart’s feminine touch with decorating, or more likely because of the way Tiffany looked curled up on the couch.

He’d almost lost her. “Losing her” might be hyperbolic, but they were the first words that had gone through his mind when he’d realized there was no more reason for them to stay together.

Except that they wanted to.

“Would you like a glass of wine, Sebastian? I think we still have the Pinot Noir from last night,” she said as she breezed through. “If you’re hungry, I could make you a sandwich.”

He was hungry. So fucking hungry. “I would prefer it if you would remove your clothing and lie on your bed and wait for me. I’ll join you in a moment.”

Her eyes widened. “You don’t want to talk about what happened tonight?”

He wasn’t sure why they would need to talk about it, but she did have needs he didn’t quite understand. “If you want to discuss the fact that we didn’t immediately recognize the problem with Milo and Gina, we certainly can do that, but you can’t be upset with yourself. It wasn’t until I sat down with the man and truly started talking to him that I realized it. Seeing him among my peers pointed out certain aspects of his personality that were incompatible with having a sexually Dominant nature.”

“I wasn’t talking about that,” she admitted. “I was talking about the fact that Master Ian did know we weren’t the right teachers for them and he still put us in an awkward position. Then he said something about having more than one problem to solve. I think he was talking about us.”

Only because Master Ian was a horrible meddler when it came to the people around him. “Yes, I suspect he was attempting to play matchmaker. And it worked. Now go and get naked so I can enjoy the fruits of his plotting.”

“You’re not angry?”

“Well, I’m getting annoyed because I didn’t get a chance to play with my sub tonight and now it seems like she wants to psychoanalyze me when all I really want to do is get my mouth on her pussy.” That was about as baldly as he could put it, but sometimes she needed that ruthless honesty. It wasn’t anything he ever would have said to her before they’d started a sexual relationship, but she should get used to him using dirty talk around her.

God knew he thought about her all the time. The dirty talk wasn’t what bothered him. The other thoughts that ran through his head did.

The thought that he could keep her, that he might be able to love this woman. Those were the thoughts that disturbed him.

But he was shoving that all aside for the moment because he wasn’t ready to let her go. He would in the end because it was the kindest thing to do.
